Civic engagement is the encouragement of the general public to become involved in the political process and the issues that affect them. It is the community coming together to be a collective source of change, political and non-political.  Citizen participation is a process that provides private individuals an opportunity to influence public decisions.

Sustainability Summit 2020: Scaling Up Action

“Limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is not impossible, but will require unprecedented transitions in all aspects of society,” warned Hoesung Lee, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), upon the release of the panel’s report in October 2018. The IPCC says global net human-caused carbon-dioxide emissions must be reduced to zero by 2050 to keep global warming below 1.5°C. In the absence of such action, the IPCC predicts that the Earth’s temperature will increase to over double this, to 3.2°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100, with catastrophic consequences.

This is the background document for the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine virtual workshop, Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities for Sustainability Science convened on November 30, December 1, and December 2, 2020.

Abstract

Cities for a Resilient Recovery

Cities for a Resilient Recovery (C2R) is a coalition of cities and resilience practitioners committed to taking leadership, to embedding resilience in recovery, and to supporting each other through the recovery planning process by sharing knowledge, providing subject matter expertise, and facilitating both individual and collective action.

Building Civic Capital

"Civic capital refers to our cities’ shared assets — or resources —from which we collectively stand to derive most of our benefits, regardless of ownership.
